Being Becoming and Belonging in Early Childhood Education

Posted by Ujjval Goble on

I have been asked by many parents in our shop Dragonfly Toys how to support their child's being becoming and belonging and what do these terms really mean in the hustle and bustle of family life. This has got me thinking. Not only is the concepts themselves so simple, it is precisely because of their simplicity that we need to remind ourselves of their intentions. Children need time to just ‘be’—time to play, try new things and have fun. Being is about living here and now. The concept of being reminds educators to focus on children in the here and...

Posted by Ujjval Goble on

With all the news about dodgy training providers, how do you choose a quality Training provider?Well there are a couple of easy ways to find out. You can look at ASQA decisions, or the VRQA Cancelations and Suspensions list to see if your provider is on that list. If you intend to access Victorian Government funding you may also like to review the Department of Education Contracts enforcement page. The problem still remains many students get caught up in training that is below standard and they do not find out until they are committed and when it is too late. The Australian...

How to choose a quality Childcare course?

Posted by Ujjval Goble on

The following the recall of over 10,000 qualifications (predominantly in Children's services) earlier this year, the Victorian Government has released yet another review into dodgy providers and it is no surprise that they are finding that courses are being delivered too quick and that students are not learning anything. Now, I know from experience that some students are quite happy with this as I have personally been offered bribes to provide certificates or to 'speed up' courses or 'reduce' attendance or homework requirements. These students have always been disappointed as we do not compromise on quality. This is a sad situation for...

Happy June Holidays & Happy Ramadan!!

Posted by Ujjval Goble on

Ramadan is a time when Muslims reflect on their lives and thoughts over the past 12 months and ask themselves what could have been done differently and better. It is a time for remembering your personal goals and reflecting on your quiet achievements. This remembering is born of enduring the hardships of fast, and in celebrating and breaking fast with your family and loved ones. It is a tremendously social time and deeply personal. It is a time for setting goals and being thankful. A time for remembering those that are less fortunate than ourselves and for giving generously. A...

Why is stacking and building with blocks so important?

Posted by Ujjval Goble on

I learnt something the other day. One of our students focus children has been increasingly labelled a problem child by staff because he loves to build tall towers and knock them down. This has been treated as out of control and overly boisterous behaviour. Why did it come to this? Further investigation revealed that the childcare centre is a large room with a wooden floating floor. With nearly 20 kids in the room I can see why the educators want to jump on anyone that is going to raise the noise levels as it would only result in a highly...

A rewarding career to counter a ‘crisis’

Posted by Ujjval Goble on

While there has been plenty of publicity about the Bendigo childcare system being in a crisis, the solutions are not hard to find, says Ujjval Goble of Organisational Learning Australia (OLA). “Family Daycare is a straightforward way to overcome the current shortfalls in the childcare system,” he said. OLA offers quality childcare education out of Bendigo to people wishing to work as childcare educators. “Bendigo particularly needs more people entering the workforce, and OLA offers quality childcare training for people – mostly women – interested in becoming childcare educators. “Educating more people to work as Famiiy Daycare educators and then...

Taking childcare training to the next level

Alana Theuma has a ready smile, and reckons the key to her teaching is her sense of humour. "I guess I perform!" she said recently, during a break from teaching the Certificate III and Diploma in Children's Services qualifications."I'm a bit of a performer. I bounce round the room and I throw out ideas. I like to give positive feedback, and strategies to improve, and that motivates students. I use positive language. I'm a positive role model."Alana has been a trainer and assessor with Organisational Learning Australia since June 2014, and has found the place she wants to stay."With workplace...

"Everyone has different ways of learning, so some of my classes are a big conversation about sharing knowledge and experience. My students tell me it's a great way to learn." Alexandra Aguilar, one of OLA's professional learning consultants, has been on a learning trajectory for most of her working life. A qualified childcare worker since 2005, Alex has worked as an educational room leader for many years at various childcare and early learning centres. She started work as a nanny, and was so good at it that she became almost too busy. "I was successful at that and word got...
